Habit 5: Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood

Listen first and then talk.

Respect · Mutual Understanding · Empathy · Courage

  • I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings.

  • I try to see things from their viewpoint (paradigm).

  • I listen to others without interrupting.

  • I listen with my ears, my eyes, and my heart.

  • I am confident in voicing my ideas.

Practicing At Home…

Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood means that it is better to listen first and talk second.

Listening shows that you care about your child. Have your child draw a picture showing a time when he or she listened to someone important. Display this page where you and your child will see it.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

Find ways everyone can win.

Mutual Benefit · Fairness · Abundance

  • I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want.

  • When conflicts arise, I look for a win-win solution.

Practicing At Home…

Think Win-Win is a belief that everyone can win. It’s not me or you, it’s both of us.

It’s working on a solution until both people are happy with it.

Display this page where you and your child will see it. Talk to your child about how

he or she used win-win thinking each day. Write it on the line and have your child

color the smiley face.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

Do the important things first.

Focus · Integrity · Discipline · Prioritization

  • I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do.

  • I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan.

  • I am disciplined and organized.

Practicing At Home…

Put First Things First means to decide what is most important and take care of it first. Talk with your child about the single most important thing he or she could do to help in the morning. Have him or her draw a picture doing that important thing. Display this page where you and your child will see it.

Put an “X” by each day your child remembers to be a leader in the morning.

Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind

Know what you want before you do it.

Have a plan.

Vision · Commitment · Purpose

  • I plan ahead and set goals.

  • I do things that have meaning and make a difference.

  • I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission and vision.

  • I look for ways to be a good citizen.

Practicing At Home…

Habit 2 is about visualizing how you would like something to turn out before it happens. If a smooth morning is the goal, brainstorm with your child how that will look and feel. Your child may actually have time to do something extra in the morning if he or she is organized and you will all have a happy start to the day.

I am a leader — I begin with the end in mind!

In the most recent weeks we have read Giraffes Can't Dance and Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun in the library. We have also discussed the character traits, self-confident and humble.

Giraffes Can't Dance is a tale about a giraffe that can't dance, but there is one little creature that believes in Gerald. "Everything makes music," the cricket explains, "if you really want it to." So Gerald starts swaying to his own sweet tune. While reading this book we discussed the importance of being self-confident and believing in yourself.

Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun is about a character named Lucy. She is one of a kind and a boy in her class likes to point that out every chance he gets. Lucy's defining moment comes when Ralph is in trouble and needs her help. Lucy has the courage to make the right choice, because she knows what she stands for. This book teaches children to respect each other's differences while dealing with adversity with self-confidence and courage.

Mrs. McNeely will be in the library this week. She is showing a video about the Scholastic Book Fair that begins next Monday, October 26 and ends Thursday, October 29.

I will be back in the library the week of November 2 and we will continue with our character lessons. :-)

We are having fun with our character lessons in the library! So far, we have read The Dot and The Juice Box Bully . We have completed activities for both books and had valuable discussions.

Students have learned that everyone has "character" and it is the way we think, feel and behave. They have also been introduced to the character traits trustworthy, respectful and collaborative. We have discussed how these are positive character traits that people can possess.

Next week we will be reading Giraffes Can't Dance. This book is a tale about a brave giraffe who can't dance, but learns to do so, when he finds music he loves. The character trait we will discuss with this book is self-confidence and how it is good to be unique and different from others.

Be looking for your student's unique art work from our lesson!
